Believe it or not, football gloves do offer protection for the players. Obviously they protect the players' hands. There are different versions of gloves that players can buy that provide different levels of protection. Gloves with more padding offer more protection than gloves with less padding (also obvious). Gloves also help prevent players from jamming their fingers and serves as a cushion in the event a player gets hit in the hands.
If it isn't clear, gloves were meant to help players catch the ball. Gloves were engineered to stay dry despite the rainy weather or the moisture coming from your hands. They also provide warmth to your hands in cold weather. Providing warmth in cold weather makes it so much easier for the player attempting to catch the ball. All in all, football gloves provide more grip and even protection for players who are trying to make a catch or anyone who is holding the ball.
I believe some catches in this video would be impossible without gloves. I thought this video clearly shows that gloves play an important role in this sport.
Football Gloves also give protection to the hands. On some pass plays, the force of the ball is strong enough to cause abrasions and cuts to the hands. When players on defense or offense are down in the clinches they need protection from helmets, face masks and from their hands getting stepped on from cleats. These gloves are designed to give this added protection.
