Indeed football is an extremely physical and dangerous sport, whether it's being played as flag football or the conventional tackling style. With the nature of the game, injuries were bound to happen. The first leather shoulder pads were first invented and introduced to players during the 1890's and were sewn directly on each players' jerseys. Then, during the 1940's, the shoulder pads evolved so that the players can put on the pads over their heads and have it sewn in the chest area. This style of shoulder pads is still being used today.
The shoulder pads serves as a cushion when making contact with other players. It not only provides protection for the shoulders, but also for the arms and the neck as well.
There also came a time when American football was so close to becoming banned entirely. This became a serious issue when a few college students died from the lack of safety gear during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, president Theodore Roosevelt required players to wear their gear, such as the shoulder pads.
