The reading I went to was the one at CSUN before spring break. The event took place in a classroom in Jerome Richfield Hall from 6-8pm. The speaker of this public reading was none other than LA's poet laureate. I found this reading to be very intriguing, learning about her experiences in life and the obstacles she faced while teaching here at CSUN. I also found it inspiring how she was able to take in all the negativity and turn it into something significantly positive. That was pretty much what her work in the reading was about. She shared with her audience, through her poetry, a glimpse of her past and the emotions she felt while going through such experiences. What I got out of this public reading was a feel for what a public reading actually was and a little inspiration from the poet laureate.
For this public reading, guests were granted free entrance offered snacks after the reading. The guests were also allowed to sit anywhere in any available seat that was offered. The event began with an icebreaker from CSUN's Literature Club's president, and later introduced the speaker, LA's poet laureate. She was the only speaker, reading her work about her past experiences. The reading was then followed by a question-and-answer type activity. Shortly afterwards, the event ended and the guests were served some snacks. There was also a book signing table near the snacks.
